Silver Filling:
Dental Amalgam commonly known as silver fillings, have been used by dentists for a long time and are known for its durability. It's also less expensive than composite fillings (tooth colored). These types of fillings are often a good choice for the back teeth where a lot of force is required to chew and since it hardens quickly, it's a good choice for children and for areas that are difficult to keep dry.
There have been a lot of questioning regarding the safety of the silver fillings due to its mercury content; but this topic has been thoroughly studied coming to the conclusion that the amount of mercury used, and the combination of the metals is totally safe and do not pose any threat to human health. The disadvantage is that the color is not natural and if the filling is done in teeth toward the front of the mouth, it might show when smiling.
White Fillings:
Composite fillings are tooth colored materials used to restore decayed or fractured teeth. It's also utilized in cosmetic dentistry to reshape, bond or change the color of the teeth. These types of restorations are very aesthetic and have the advantage to be more flexible which means more of the tooth structure could be preserved. Among the drawbacks of the composite fillings are the facts that it doesn't last as long as the silver one and it takes longer to be placed in the mouth.
A dental crown, commonly known as dental caps, is a type of restoration in which the tooth or implant is completely enclosed. It's indicated when there's a large cavity, an extensive filling or fracture that might impact the health of the tooth negatively. Crowns are bonded to the tooth or implant with a strong dental cement and are durable and effective to protect the teeth.
There are many types of crowns, made of different materials. Rest assured that in our practice we will present our patients with a variety of options and together we'll pick the choice that better suits your needs and lasts longer.
We also offer Same Day Crowns.
Dental bridges are fixed restorations used to replace one or more missing teeth. It's supported by natural teeth, implants or a combination of both. There are different types of bridges and they're usually made of porcelain fused to metal or ceramics. Bridges cost may vary according to the size and also the material used. With good oral hygiene, fixed bridges are a suitable option when implants are not a choice to replace missing teeth. Its disadvantages include the possibility of developing cavities on the supporting teeth, due to poor oral hygiene, but with the appropriate care, they will last longer.
Root Canals are indicated when there is inflammation or infection in the root of the tooth. During the procedure the dentist will remove the pulp inside the tooth, clean and disinfect the canal(s) and seal the space with a filling. Root Canals have been historically associated with pain and while some discomfort is expected after the treatment; it should last just for few days. Here in our office we will do everything in our hands to make you feel comfortable before, during and after the procedure and to ensure your experience is pain and stress free.
